Network Resilience: My Insights from CentralSquare ENGAGE 2025 and Recent Global Outages

Last week, I represented Dejero at CentralSquare ENGAGE 2025 in Orlando, Florida (April 27-30), where we joined over 1,700 government and public safety leaders to showcase our solutions for secure, connected public service. As global sales director focusing on the federal sector at Dejero, I had the opportunity to present our mission-critical connectivity solutions to organizations facing serious network reliability challenges.

Here is the alarming truth that plague the public safety sector. Over two-thirds (67%) of first responders have experienced dispatch outages, and 88% have encountered other IT malfunctions. Reuters reports that 84% of agencies using computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems reported outages impacting response times, with over a third experiencing such outages six to ten times annually. These aren't just statistics to me—they represent real emergencies where connectivity failures put lives at risk.

The current global network instability

What made my presentation at CentralSquare particularly timely was the recent wave of network disruptions documented in ThousandEyes' global network outage report. For the week of April 14-20, 2025, there were 309 global network outage events across ISPs, cloud service provider networks, collaboration app networks and edge networks—and that was actually a 45% decrease from the previous week's 559 outages.

The impact of network disruptions on critical infrastructure cannot be overstated, particularly in the public safety sector. Recent industry research from Splunk reveals that downtime costs Global 2000 companies approximately $400 billion annually, highlighting the massive financial impact when critical systems fail. These aren't just abstract statistics—for emergency services and first responders, network failures directly impact response times and can put lives at risk. When dispatch systems experience outages or communication networks go down, the consequences affect real people during real emergencies. This reality is exactly the kind of scenario our Dejero solutions are designed to mitigate, ensuring continuous connectivity for mission-critical systems that simply cannot afford downtime.

The real-world impact I've witnessed

The discussions at CentralSquare ENGAGE 2025 confirmed what many of us in the public safety sector already know: network disruptions aren't just inconvenient—they can be dangerous. When dispatch systems fail or communication networks go down, the consequences affect real people in real emergencies.

According to Splunk's recent "The Hidden Costs of Downtime" report, released in June 2024, North American companies face staggering costs from system failures, with U.S. businesses experiencing the highest downtime expenses at approximately $256 million per year - significantly higher than their global counterparts. The report reveals that lost revenue is the largest direct cost at $49 million annually, and it can take organizations up to 75 days to recover that revenue following a major disruption.

For those of us in public safety, the costs transcend financial considerations—response times, situational awareness, and ultimately, human lives may be affected by connectivity failures.

Dejero Smart Blending Technology™ in action

The highlight of my participation at CentralSquare ENGAGE 2025 was demonstrating Dejero Smart Blending Technology™ in action. Our approach differs fundamentally from traditional failover systems by simultaneously combining multiple networks—including broadband/fiber and wireless connections like 4G/5G and satellite—to provide continuous connectivity even during partial outages.

The most technical attendees appreciated our explanation of the intelligent network management layer: our proprietary algorithms dynamically manage fluctuating bandwidth, packet loss, and latency differences in real-time, maintaining session persistence even when individual networks degrade. Several IT directors from emergency services departments immediately recognized how this technology could prevent the kinds of dispatch outages referenced in our presentation.

The feedback we received was tremendous. Public safety leaders repeatedly told me that as their dependency on networked systems grows, they can no longer accept the vulnerability of traditional single-network approaches. Our live demonstrations showed them how multi-path connectivity solutions can eliminate the dead zones and outage vulnerabilities that continue to plague their operations.

The emergency services directors who attended our breakout sessions clearly recognized that implementing redundant connectivity solutions like our Smart Blending Technology is essential to prepare for the inevitable challenges that lie ahead in our increasingly connected world.
